Caring for Mops – How to Maintain Wet Mops & Dust Mops

Most mops do not wear out through use, but through abuse. A few simple maintenance pointers will extend the life and improve the efficiency of your mops.

How To Break-In a Wet Mop
For best cleaning performance results, cotton mops should always complete a break-in period to remove naturally occurring oils before first use.

  • Step 1: Fill a mop bucket with water and a diluted neutral floor cleaner according to directions– water temperature should be between 120º F – 140º F degrees.
  • Step 2: Immerse the mop head for 5 seconds & agitate, ensuring the solution is absorbed in all mop fibers.
  • Step 3: Wring-out, rinse and repeat the process up to 5 times if necessary.
  • Step 4: Dispose of cleaning solution and prepare a fresh solution for the appropriate cleaning tasks.

Wet Mop Use and Care

  • Break-in new mop heads in warm, mild detergent solution for at least ten minutes (this applies to cotton mops only). Microfiber wet mops do NOT require any type of break-in period.
  • All mops should be rinsed after every use with warm water and hung in a ventilated area to dry– never leave a mop in a wet-solution overnight.
  • Avoid scrubbing with the top portion of mop as this tends to tear strands and shorten mop life.
  • Avoid strong cleaning solutions (bleach, caustics, etc.) as they will break strands far more quickly.
  • When mopping a rough surface, mop in a direction that minimizes snagging. If possible, reserve one particular mop for these surfaces.
  • Cut off any loose strands to prevent snagging and splattering.
  • Thoroughly rinse and wring out mops after each use.
  • Store mops with strands hanging down, in a warm, dry, well circulated area.
  • Discard and replace worn out mop heads. Lost strands decrease mops ability to perform. If a mop is only 75% of its original weight, it will take 1/3 additional time to get the job done.

Dust Mop Use and Care

  • Collect the dust mops at the end of each shift and shake out, vacuum or brush the mop completely to remove the larger particles from the mop. Re-treat as needed.
  • Store mop heads in a dry clean area with the head up, not touching the wall or floor.
  • Soiled mop heads should be laundered. For laundering, place the mop head in a netted bag.(Infinity Twist dust mop heads do not require bagging.)
